Non-small cell lung cancer stages (NSCLC)
The most widely used system for staging non-small cell lung cancer is the TNM staging system. In this system:
- T describes the size of the tumour (T)
- N indicates whether the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes (N) and to what extent
- M indicates whether the cancer has spread or metastasized (M) to other organs
Based on the tumour characteristics (size, spread to lymph nodes, and metastasis), each tumour is assigned a TNM score, which determines its stage.
Non-small cell lung cancer is categorized into five stages, from stage 0 to stage 4. Stages 1-4 are often written using Roman numerals: I, II, III, and IV. A higher stage number means the cancer is more advanced or has spread more extensively.
