Addressing Gaps in Post-First-Line Therapy for Those with Advanced Lung Cancer

The Give a Breath Research Award is designed to address critical gaps in the understanding and treatment of advanced lung cancer, specifically focusing on post-first-line therapy options. Funded through the incredible support of the Give a Breath 5K, Canada’s premier fundraising event for lung cancer awareness, this award reflects a commitment to advancing research that has a direct and meaningful impact on patients and their families.

The Inspiration Behind Give a Breath: Tim Monds' Journey

In the spring of 2016, at the age of 57, Tim Monds was diagnosed with stage 1 lung cancer. As someone who had never smoked, Tim and his family were stunned by the diagnosis. His journey began with persistent chest pain, left shoulder discomfort, and recurrent bronchial pneumonia, leading to a visit to the hospital where a nodule was discovered through an X-ray. A subsequent CT scan confirmed the lung cancer diagnosis. After the initial shock, Tim knew he had to take action—not just for himself, but for others facing the same battle.

Determined to make a difference, Tim and his family launched the Give a Breath 5K in 2019 in Edmonton, Alberta. This community-based walk/run event was created to unite those affected by lung cancer, healthcare professionals, advocates, and supporters. The funds raised from the inaugural event were instrumental in purchasing specialized equipment for the thoracic department at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and supporting a research study on the early detection of lung cancer.

Hope, solidarity, and determination.

In 2022, Tim partnered with Lung Cancer Canada to broaden the scope of Give a Breath. What started as a local event in Edmonton has now grown into a nationwide movement, with in-person events in Edmonton, Halifax, Toronto, and Vancouver, along with a virtual event that brings together participants from across the country.

Since its inception, Give a Breath has become more than just a fundraising event - it has evolved into a powerful symbol of hope, solidarity, and determination in the fight against lung cancer. The funds raised have not only advanced research efforts and improved health outcomes, but have also shone a much-needed spotlight on lung cancer, raising awareness of this too often-overlooked disease.
