Shem Singh
(Ex Officio) Executive Director, Lung Cancer Canada
My journey with Lung Cancer Canada is not just professional; it is deeply personal. When I first joined the organization, lung cancer was not something that had directly affected me. However, over time, I have lost family and friends to this devastating disease — a disease that impacts so many and discriminates against none. These personal losses have only deepened my commitment to the cause. Every day, I ask myself a simple yet profound question: "What have we done for someone with lung cancer today?" This question lies at the heart of Lung Cancer Canada and is what drives me every single day.
Each year, 31,000 Canadians will receive a lung cancer diagnosis. We need to reach these individuals and their loved ones wherever they are, providing them with information, support, and a sense of community. While we have made significant strides in understanding and treating lung cancer, so much work remains. Despite its prevalence and devastating impact, lung cancer continues to be under-resourced and underfunded, and it is still surrounded by misconceptions and stigma. It is time to change that narrative, and I believe that together, we can. Through our collective efforts, I am confident that we can overcome the challenges and create a future where lung cancer receives the attention and support it truly deserves.
